I love this idea and the composition is working well. With the strongly back lit figures, The whales also need to have a more solid mass. It would make sense to change the value of the whales from light to dark with some nice rim lighting. This might cause you to rush the water light (reflective) so you can still have a value contrast. I know this sounds like a drastic change, but I think it would make the piece more dramatic and believable. Try a Photoshop version first, rather than changing the painting.
